Five Broken Cameras

- Story Bacground

In 2002, Ariel Sharon’s government decides to build a barrier with the purpose of securing Israeli population. The construction starts rapidly from the north. Many Palestinian soon discover that the barrier is planned to be constructed on their lands or inside their villages, cities and in many times miles away from the 1967 international Green Line and inside the Palestinian occupied territories.

In 2004, villagers of Bil’in, a small village west of Ramallah, discover that the barrier will be constructed on their lands, thus confiscating more than half of the village’s agricultural lands. In February 2005, the works on the route of the barrier starts. Throughout the years, Bil’in’s villagers had lost agricultural lands for the foundation of the new Israeli settlements, but the barrier planned will not only confiscate more lands, it will also limit their movement even more. The villagers of Bil’in decide to resist. They initiate a popular struggle with non-violent ideas and start weekly demonstrations and direct actions joined by international movements like the International Solidarity Movement, Israeli peace activists and groups, such as Coalition of Women for Peace, Gush Shalom and Anarchists Against the Wall. Bil’in’s struggle rapidly becomes a symbol of Palestinian popular resistance worldwide.
