Tehran, under the Skin dives into the heart of Iran’s beauty surgery epidemic, following the personal journeys of numerous patients who queue for hours in Tehran’s clinics. While surgeons like Rozina and Siamak facilitate these transformations, the film’s true focus lies on the women (and men) on the operating tables. They are the ones who endure the pain, the bleeding, and the hope. Director Afsaneh Salari, initially puzzled by the epidemic, immerses herself in their stories, discovering that for many, this is as much a submission to a capitalist gaze as a subconscious reaction to decades of invisibility. Since the "Woman, Life, Freedom" movement reshaped the social fabric, the film captures a Tehran in transition, asking: when the body is the only battlefield left, is cutting oneself a way to say “no"?
